Three different ideas

Probiotics are live microorganisms, prebiotics are substrates used by microorganisms, and fermented foods are foods created through microbial activity. They overlap, but they are not interchangeable products.

Read beyond the front

Look for identified strains, the amount guaranteed through expiry, serving instructions, storage needs, allergens, and the NPN. A product with many strains or a very high CFU count is not automatically the best choice for every person or purpose.

When to seek help

Persistent abdominal pain, blood in stool, unexplained weight loss, dehydration, fever, or major changes in bowel habits warrant medical attention. People who are immunocompromised or seriously ill should obtain professional guidance before using probiotic supplements.
